“Go with the flow” sounds nice. It’s a comforting thought—believing that the future will just work itself out. And a lot of the time, it does. But eventually, life stops carrying you along and asks you to pick a direction.

Sometimes those choices are massive, life-changing moments. But most of the time, they’re tiny. They’re almost invisible. Think about today: you chose to read this. You’ll choose what to post, what to eat for dinner, what to wear to that party. You’ll decide whether to send that email now or wait until tomorrow, and whether to smile at a stranger or keep your head down.

When you stack them all up, these little decisions quietly run our lives. They’re like a mirror—they show who you really are, what you actually care about, and who you’re becoming. There’s something powerful about realizing that even your smallest choices are a reflection of your soul.

The Roads We Didn’t Take

I often wonder: What if I hadn’t made that choice? What would my life look like if I had flipped tails instead of heads?

Robert Frost’s poem about the road not taken hits on that specific ache we all feel sometimes. I’ll be honest—I didn’t really get it the first time I read it. But the idea stuck with me anyway. Maybe that’s how it works: some ideas just sit inside you, waiting until you’re ready for them.

We usually start overthinking these things when life feels messy. In those moments, it helps to remember that life moves in waves. There’s an up, then a down, then an up again. Being in a “down” spot doesn’t mean you’ve failed; it’s just the gap between the good parts. What comes next can still be great.

Sit With It—Then Move On

It’s human to wonder about the “other paths.” It can even be healthy. The trick is to make sure you don’t end up living there. Give those thoughts a little bit of your time—but don’t give them all of it.

  • Acknowledge the feeling.
  • Take a breath.
  • Let it wash through you.
  • See if there’s a lesson in it.

Then, when you’re ready, move on. Because you can. That’s a choice, too.

How to Find Your Footing

When your mind starts looping and won’t stop, find the things that remind you who you are:

  • Your people: The friend who tells you the truth and sticks by you.
  • Your passion: That one hobby or project where you totally lose track of time.
  • Your place: A favorite park bench, a corner of a café, or just your room with the door shut.
  • Your comforts: A meal you love, a playlist that always works, or the routine that gets your head right.

Usually, you only need one “true” thing to help you find your way again. Go back to that thing when the world gets too loud.

The Better “What If”

We are all experts at imagining what could go wrong. We play those movies in our heads all day. But what if we took the “good” possibilities just as seriously?

  • What if I actually hit those 2026 goals?
  • What if the new job is a perfect fit?
  • What if moving away is the best thing I ever do?
  • What if this tough season is actually the turning point?

Let those possibilities lead the way. It’s not about being fake-happy; it’s about trusting yourself. You aren’t guaranteed the exact future you want, but you can keep making choices that point you in that direction.

Trust yourself. You’ve made it this far through millions of decisions—some big, most small, but all of them yours. The next one is yours, too.
